Chapter Sixteen

The week flew by and soon it was Thursday night, Raid Night, and Tassta prepared herself as she did time and time again. Raids were usually only considered when the need for food or medical supplies deemed it necessary, but this time it was deemed by the need of others, several others in fact — the children of the Underground. She wasn’t really looking forward to this raid though she knew she needed it under her belt to qualify for Guardianship. She threw on her black boots and black jumpsuit, pulled her hair up into a tight ponytail, and clipped her tiny pink hair bow over her dark, thick bangs to hold them in place. She gathered her wits about her, brushed off her jumpsuit, and stared at herself in the mirror of her dresser. Come on, girl, you have to be brave. Someone has to bring those children in from the Underground. We already promised we’d do this for them.

Tassta tried to convince herself that the raid would go smoothly. Unfortunately, bringing back supplies on a raid was one thing. Going out, bringing back lots of homeless children in the dead of night, dragging them through the dangerous streets of war-torn Atlanta, Georgia, was another. She really thought she was prepared for the second visit to the Underground, but the closer it came to the date of the raid, the more nervous she got. She kept remembering all the sick children begging to be taken away from their hellish existence. It was so sad, so surreal. She grabbed her small silver gun and slipped it into her holster and then she went out the door to meet up with her friends at the usual rendezvous point, the fortress parking lot. It was early evening and the sky was a pretty pastel blue as she walked past the front gate to the backyard. She sighed. Yet again she was going on a raid with her brother in that old green monster.

She turned the corner and there in the back of the lot Penn stood next to his green van. Next to him were Lochulus and Sevalli, and in front of them was a man in a silver Mylar hood, Griffin. Several loaded beige canvas bags laid on the ground before them and the guys talked amongst themselves. Tassta stopped in her tracks when she saw Griffin. She was going to smile until she remembered she was supposed to be angry with him. Well, I might as well get this over with. She closed her mouth tight and brushed her ponytail back. She hesitated, then casually averted Griffin’s eyes, and continued to walk towards the van.

“It sure took you long enough.” Penn scooted around to the driver’s side of the old green van. He got in, slammed the door, and put on his seat belt.

“I know. I’m sorry.” Tassta got into the van’s passenger side. She spied Griffin in the rearview mirror and pretended not to see him while she buckled her seat belt.
